I don’t know for the structure in Mexico…
but the one in Montreal wasn’t meant to be exactly the way we see it today.
During structural renovations in May 1976, a fire burned away the building’s transparent acrylic bubble, but the steel lattice remained (text taken from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Montreal_Biosphère)
